Job Announcement: Retention Specialist/Head Baseball Coach - Columbia Basin College

Columbia Basin College ("CBC" or the "College") seeks a Retention Specialist/Head Baseball Coach to provide educational planning and assistance to CBC students.  This position will provide a full range of academic advice and guidance in individual and group sessions, assist students experiencing academic difficulties and refer students to counseling professionals as appropriate.  In addition to Retention Specialist duties, this position is also responsible for the development and maintenance of a competitive men's baseball program within the guidelines of the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) and the College.  This position reports to the Associate Dean for Student Retention and Completion as well as the Director of Athletics for coaching responsibilities.

This position is open until filled.  Priority consideration will be given to applicants whose application has been received by June 20, 2019 at 11:59 PM PDT.

Primary Responsibilities

Retention Specialist

  • Advise prospective, new and current students with college admissions requirements, assessment/placement options, college transfer and professional/technical programs, degree requirements and transfer process;
  • Assess student progress toward degree or certificate requirements and make appropriate referrals for students in need of academic or personal counseling;
  • Advise students in the development of educational, career and life goals; assist with course selection and the development of an individualized academic plan;
  • Collaborate with counselors, completion coaches and other Student Services staff to provide new student advising/registration sessions each quarter;
  • Maintain automated and manual records of student progress including, but not limited to electronic notes, statistical reports and academic plans; ensure all records follow college, state, federal and professional guidelines;
  • Provide and participate in advising, programming and interventions aimed at promoting student retention and completion; may include addressing barriers to success; orientation for new students; educational planning workshops or appointments; connecting with students nearing completion to ensure academic goals are accomplished;
  • Update and maintain the online orientation system;
  • Provide basic financial aid information and develop financial aid plans for students;
  • Assist students with completing graduation applications;
  • Collaborate with other college departments and staff to assist students in meeting their academic and career goals;
  • Improve professional knowledge and skills by engaging in professional development activities and keeping current on issues pertaining to student success, advising, and degree requirements; 
  • Participate in college and community meetings as appropriate;
  • Establish and maintain positive and professional relationships with faculty, staff and administrators; facilitate student success, student retention and diversity efforts; and 
  • Other duties as assigned.
Head Baseball Coach
  • Develop and maintain a competitive baseball program within the guidelines and philosophy of the College and the NWAC;
  • Recruit student athletes within the rules and regulations of the NWAC and CBC;
  • Teach the fundamentals of baseball and create practice and game schedules;
  • Develop and adhere to budgetary guidelines as established by the Athletic Department;
  • Promote a diverse college environment and enhance the college's visibility in the local community;
  • Participate in Athletic Department meetings and other activities to promote physical health and well-being within the student body;
  • Support student development through participation in co-curricular activities;
  • Promote high ethics and integrity through personal behavior and expectation of student behavior; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university; 
  • One (1) year of experience working with diverse populations of varied ethnicities, ages, backgrounds, and abilities in an educational, nonprofit or social services setting; 
  • Experience giving oral presentations in a group setting;
  • Experience playing or coaching competitive baseball;
  • Have a valid US driver's license; and 
  • Have a current CPR/First Aid Card at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university;
  • One (1) year of experience working with under prepared adults, first generation college students, and/or students with special needs;
  • Experience in a community college setting.
