NWAC Announces Discontinued Sponsorship of Men's & Women's Tennis
VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Northwest Athletic Conference announced that it is has discontinued sponsorship of men's and women's tennis, effective May 3, 2025.
NWAC Executive Director, Marco Azurdia said the executive board made the decision after reviewing the declining men's and women's teams participating in tennis. "We are thankful for the coaches and student-athletes past and present who participated in NWAC tennis over the years." NWAC men's tennis first began in 1947, and women's tennis originated in 1979.
"This was a difficult decision to make and this announcement no doubt is disappointing for our student-athletes, coaches, and the conference as a whole," Azurdia said. "The current players and coaches have performed with class and at a high-level. Their success in the classroom and competition speaks volumes about their character."'
NWAC tennis ended on a high note with Highline taking the women's tennis title and Bellevue capturing the men's tennis championships. The Thunderbirds defeated Treasure Valley 5-4 in the final for their second-ever championship. Bellevue won its seventh-straight men's tennis title and 13th all-time.
Azurdia shared that there are many factors that go into a decision such as this and when weighing those factors, it was clear NWAC could not sponsor men's and women's tennis as a intercollegiate sport. He also stated that NWAC will continue to focus on providing resources to maintain its remaining championship sport programs.
