Position Summary

This position is responsible for planning and assessing a quality intercollegiate athletics and on-campus recreation program with a focus on student success. This position provides leadership and management in developing, implementing and evaluation an annual operational plan and a long-term business plan to enhance student retention, student athlete recruitment, community relationships, and public relations. 

Administrative responsibilities include:  annual budget request process, program development, evaluation and review, personnel management, budget and inventory oversight, development and enforcement of policies and procedures, and monitoring for compliance. This position works with the Green River Foundation to bring on board all assistant athletic coaches and to coordinate fundraising efforts. Work with internal departments to ensure academic success for student athlete cohort. 

ABOUT THE COLLEGE:
Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical students, 15% Adult Basic Education student, and 3% Applied Bachelor degrees.  Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, Washington, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw.  Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. Green River's service areas are increasingly ethnically diverse, comprising African Americans, African immigrants, Asian Americans, Asians, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern Americans, among other communities.

Position Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction in the development of short- and long-range plans for a comprehensive recreational program serving 5500 full time students. Assists the department coordinator gather and interpret recommendations and coordinate recreation and athletics department programs. 
  • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures set forth by Green River College, the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC), Washington State and Federal guidelines. 
  • Work with the ASGRC Finance Committee to develop annual budget proposals and program operations for all varsity sports, recreation sports, and fitness recreation programs. Responsible for department fiscal stewardship by monitoring budget status, administering equipment procurement and generating revenue opportunities and needed. 
  • Supervise the scheduling of all athletic contest and practices: oversee travel arrangements; coordinate officiating and event management; provide supervision at all home athletic events, including assisting visiting teams and serving as event safety coordinator. 
  • Determine and award tuition assistance scholarships and waivers in accordance with NWAC regulations and college availability. Collaborate with Green River College Foundation to develop and implement fundraising activities. 
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate full time athletic and recreation staff. Hire, supervise and evaluate head coaches. Coordinate payroll timesheets for coaches, game management, work study students and volunteer assistant coaches. 
  • Assist head coaches with student recruitment and student admissions processes, and in coordination with the registrar's office, complete NWAC required student athlete eligibility reports. 
  • Track and evaluate student academic progress. Ensure and emphasis on the academic success of student athletes through development and promotion of GRC support services to include tutoring, academic advising and other retention strategies. Promote the Athletic Director academic honor roll. 
  • Be responsible for the integrity of the Recreation and Athletics program which included the oversight of inventory procurement, fiscal responsibility and revenue creation. 
  • Serve as official spokesperson for the Athletic and Recreation department by marketing and promoting all college athletic and recreation programs. 
  • Coordinate use of athletic facilities with the Recreation and Physical Education staff. Initiate contracts for use of off campus facilities with Kent Parks, Auburn Parks, Puyallup Parks, local school districts, and other outside business partners. Serves as technical advisor to recreational sports clubs and fitness instructors. 
  • Provides for risk management practices in recreation, ensuring all safety rules, regulations and procedures are followed. Makes sure that all employees are trained in safety procedures. 
  • Serve as one of two commissioners to the NWAC and any sports committee assignments as needed. 
  • Work with Green River international program department to cultivate recreational opportunities that will engage the international student population. Work strategically to marker program to oversee students. 
  • Maintain and update college policies including the 522 financial code that pertain to the administration of the intercollegiate athletics and campus recreation program; provide annual reports required for compliance with state and federal agencies. 
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines for gender equity in athletics. Serve as a member of the GRC Cleary Compliance Committee. 
  • Participate with the Green River Student Affairs Leadership Team. 
  • Coordinate with Conference Serve staff for the calendar scheduling and usage of the gymnasium  facilitites. 

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Sports Management, Business Management or Health Physical Education and Recreation and/or 3+ years of professional experience in athletic administration or like field equivalent. 
  • Athletic coaching background. 
  • Familiarity of colligate admissions, recruitment and financial aid processes. 
  • Effective communication skills, written and verbal.
