Spokane Rallies from Down 4, Walks-Off 6-5 in the 9th to Eliminate Bellevue

LONGVIEW, Wash. – The Spokane Sasquatch kept their tournament run alive with a two-out walk off single that scored two runs to defeat the Bellevue Bulldogs 6-5 in game five of the 2024 NWAC Baseball Championship on Friday at David Story Field.

The Sasquatch (29-18) trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the eighth inning and were able to score three runs in the eighth to trail by just one heading to the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Spokane got runners on first and second with two outs for leftfielder Jaxson Davis. Davis lined a single to right field that would easily bring home the tying run, but an errant throw home went to the backstop and Joseph Rajo scored the winning run all the way from first.

After scoring one run through 16 innings to start the tournament, the Sasquatch gave themselves a chance with a three-run eighth. Carson Coffield started the inning with a pinch hit, solo home run to cut the deficit to three. Three-straight batters reached base to follow Coffield, loading the bases with no outs. D. Long brought home a run on a fielder's choice and J. King had an RBI sacrifice fly to pull CCS within one.

Bellevue looked to be well in control of the game after Brandon McKinley hit the tournament's first home run, a two-run shot to left field in the top of the eighth to give the Bulldogs a commanding 5-1 lead. Konnor Sutton had two RBI for Bellevue, first on a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the first, followed by a bases-loaded free pass in the fifth.

Micah Hagler gave the Bulldogs eight solid innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, with one walk and three strikeouts. Spokane starting pitcher Evan Hamberger earned a no-decision as he went seven innings with four runs allowed on four hits and six walks with five punchouts. Tyler Alm earned the victory in relief with a scoreless top of the ninth.

Spokane keeps their championship aspirations alive as they move on in the bracket. They will next play on Saturday at 2:05 p.m. against the loser of the winner's bracket game between Everett and Linn-Benton. Bellevue finishes their season with a 25-26-1 record and their 40th trip to the NWAC Championship, second all-time.
