Spokane Scores 3 Unanswered Goals to Win Women’s Soccer Championship 3-2 Over Clark

TUKWILA, Wash. – The Community Colleges of Spokane scored three unanswered goals after falling behind 2-0 to Clark College to win their third-ever NWAC Women's Soccer Championship 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Starfire Stadium.

A wild end to the first half set the Sasquatch up with momentum and the opportunity to overcome the deficit after 45 minutes. With just two minutes of stoppage time added at the end of the first half, it looked as if the teams would go into halftime with Clark leading 1-0. However, Clark extended its lead to 2-0 as Citlaly Soto found the back of the net for the Penguins. No more than a minute later, Spokane answered back just before the end of the half as they got an immediate corner kick. Peyton Bastine, who took all 13 of the teams corner kicks in the match, placed a perfect ball that found the head of defender Madison Carr for the Sasquatch's first goal of the game.

Spokane continued the momentum into the second half, as Tournament MVP Alexa Deatherage scored her third goal over the weekend to make it a brand-new match, assisted by Lizbeth Soto.

Just about 10 minutes later, the Sasquatch grabbed their first lead of the match as Ellie Johnson scored in the 57th minute to go up 3-2. In an incredible 12-minute stretch of game time, the Sasquatch scored three-straight goals.

Each team had opportunities to score over the rest of the second half, but Spokane stood strong defensively to capture the title.

Clark's Anna Neal had the opening goal of the match in the 36th minute after turning a Spokane turnover in front of the net into a quick score.

Each team had 12 shots in the match, but Spokane dominated scoring opportunities with 13-2 advantage in corner kicks. Kiah Gary made one save in net for the Sasquatch while Amanda Jeschke had two saves for the Penguins.

After finishing second place in the East Region, Spokane advanced through the championship bracket with a 2-1 win over Chemeketa, followed by an upset of reigning champion Peninsula by way of a penalty kick shootout in the quarterfinals. The Sasquatch followed that with a 4-1 win of Lower Columbia in the semis before defeating Clark in the finals.

The Penguins finish another outstanding year with 15 wins and the runners-up for the second year in a row.
