Highline, Treasure Valley Advance to Women's Finals, Bellevue Leading Men's After Day 1 NWAC Tennis Championships
YAKIMA, Wash. - Day one of the 2025 NWAC Men's and Women's Tennis Championships concluded on Friday with Highline and Treasure Valley women's tennis teams advancing to the finals of the team brackets, while Bellevue leads the men's tennis individual scoring thus far.
On the women's side, No. 1-seed Highline took down defending champions and No. 4 seed Spokane by a 6-3 score. After falling behind 2-1 in doubles play, the Thunderbirds responded by winning five of six singles matches to take the duel over the Sasquatch. In the No. 1 singles, Highline's Sophia Crosby won a close match 7-6 (7-5) and 6-3 over Spokane's Elsie Carsey. The first set was determined by tiebreaker as Crosby and Carsey were tied 6-6. Crosby was able to narrowly win the first set with a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker game. Crosby and teammate Caley Buchan also won their No. 1 doubles over Carsey and Jaycee Oglesbee by an 8-3 score. The win for the Thunderbirds marks their seventh-straight trip to the NWAC final, last winning in 2022.
In the other semifinal featuring No. 2 Treasure Valley and No. 3 Bellevue, the Chukars came out on top in a close 5-4 duel. The Chukars used a sweep of the doubles to start the day to propel them to victory, despite Bellevue winning four of six singles matches. No. 2 Reese Beyrouty and No. 6 Fabiola Perez won crucial singles matches for the Chukars to clinch the win. Beyrouty was undefeated on the day, pairing with Zavier Lake in the No. 1 doubles spot to defeat Bellevue's Bean Lowe and Shanna Chua 8-4.
Highline and Treasure Valley will meet in the final on Saturday at 11 a.m. Spokane and Bellevue will play for third starting at 9:30 a.m.
On the men's side, three individual champions already clinched by going 2-0 on Friday. In the No. 2 singles spot, Bellevue's Ryan Gavino clinched 18 points for the Bulldogs by winning both matches over Treasure Valley's Sam Swing and Spokane's Christian Torres. Gavino didn't drop a set and only five total games between the two matches.
Spokane's Abraham Saurombe clinched the No. 3 singles title by winning both matches as well. Saurombe took down Bellevue's Colby Weller and Treasure Valley's Kaden Giles to earn 16 points for the Sasquatch.
In the No. 5 singles, Bellevue's Cole Fredericks swept his two matches to add 12 points to the Bulldogs' score. Fredericks swept TVCC's Humberto Gonzales and then Spokane's Tony Amaya.
The No. 1, 4 and 6 singles spots are still up for grabs on Saturday, as is all three doubles. As a whole, Bellevue went 9-1 in all matches to lead the way.
The men's tournament continues on Saturday with round two of doubles matches at 9 a.m. followed by the conclusion of doubles starting at 10 a.m. The final round of singles matches are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
